Tip #1_ To have more fun in your business, get clear on what you really want in your life

How to Have More Fun in Your Business (and Life)!

Do you remember why you started your own business? When you look back to that decision to take that leap, do you remember the excitement? The freedom you anticipated having? The ability to make your own decisions and serve your clients or customers in the way you really want to? To increase your ability make a difference and use your gifts?

And now that you have been in business for a while, what is your current experience with running your own business? Do you still enjoy what you do? Do you feel like you have the freedom you anticipated when you set out? Do you still feel that excitement and passion for doing what you do?

Or like many business owners, do you feel like the business is running you? That you don’t have much of a personal life? That you aren’t carving out the quality time you had envisioned to spend with your loved ones? That you can’t ever disconnect? That you are spending your time doing things you really don’t enjoy doing?

One of the things I love to help my clients with is stepping back and looking at what they really want to experience vs. what they are currently experiencing and then identifying simple, yet effective tools and strategies to address the gap. So, over the next several posts, I want to share some of these strategies with you.

And while I am a business consultant, I really, truly believe that we are whole people, and we need to look at our lives holistically with our businesses as just one component of that full life. For entrepreneurs I think this is especially critical.

Tip #1: Get clear on what you really want to experience in your business and in your life. [Tweet this!]

A few guidelines for this exercise:

  • Before you start this exercise, remove all distractions. Light a candle to create a sacred space, if that speaks to you. Take a few minutes to get quiet and centered by taking a few deep breaths
  • Think about where you want to be a year from now in both your life and your business.
  • Write your list in the present tense, as if these things are already true in your life. As if they have already happened for you.
  • Write each item in the positive. Focus on what you do want, not what you don’t want.  Don’t be fooled, this is easier said than done! The instances of what you no longer want in your life can be sneaky – look for anywhere where you have used words like “isn’t”, “don’t”, or “no longer”.
  • Write your list and then go back and take a long hard look at where you contra-indicate your desires, then reword them into the positive manifestation of what you really desire.

So, a year from now, what do you want your life and business to look like?

Relationships. Whom do you want to spend your time with? Whom would you love to serve through your business (your clients or customers)? Whom do you want to be working with? Living with? Spending your free time with? What do your relationships with the most important people in your life look like?

Activity. What type of activities do you want to engage in every day? How do you want to spend your time? What are your priorities? Which activities would you love to outsource? What have you struggled with for too long, that you are now ready to find someone who can guide you through it?

Time Freedom. How many hours a day or week or month or year would you ideally like to be working? Spending time on your other interests or hobbies? Spending time with friends and family? Traveling? Doing other things you love or that you dream of but never get around to?

Financial Success. How much income would you like to be making? What would you like to be able to do with your additional income? Travel? Support causes that are important to you? Invest in your future or retirement? Save money to send your kids to college in a few years?

Learning & Development. What new things do you want to learn or feel you need to learn to move forward in your business and life? Where would you love some additional support or guidance?

Health & Wellness. What do you want your health and wellness to look like? Do you want to eat less sugar? Or stop snacking at night? Do you want to establish a fitness routine that supports you in living your best life and/or helps you get stronger physically (and maybe mentally too)? Do you want to heal from a health issue that has been plaguing you way too long but that you tend to ignore instead of address?

Try this out and then come back and leave me a note in the comments to this post. How did this go for you? What was one ah-ha you gained from this exercise that you didn’t have awareness of previously?

Next week stay tuned for the next installment in this series, where we will start to take a look at how you spend your time.

I hope you have a great week!
